The World’s End Floor Sanding Business

Down the road, Chelsea Parish Church, St Luke’s anticipates the gothic revival which was to dominate Victorian ecclesiastical architecture.

Built from 1820-24 at a cost of £40000 (all raised by public subscription) it attracted considerable interest as the first English church for two centuries to be built in a medieval style.

It has retained this degree of fame and its grandeur is undeniable. Yet the clumsiness – flying buttresses with no pinnacles and the tower stuck on to the nave – makes the achievements of unsung medieval architects all the more admirable.

Dickens married Catherine Hogarth here in 1836. Charles Kingsley’s father was rector here and the writer served briefly under him as curate before going to Eversley in Hampshire.
